Daniel Fitzgerald on Titans’ first round upset win

The Brantford Titans, having claimed a playoff berth on the final day of the regular season, shocked the GOJHL with a stunning first-round upset.  As the 7th seed, they faced the 2nd-seeded Ayr Centennials and found themselves up 3-0 in the series, only for Ayr to rally and force a Game 7.  Despite the pressure, Brantford held firm, with a dominant performance in Game 7 to secure a 2-0 win and advance to the Conference Semi-finals.

Titans head coach and general manager Daniel Fitzgerald speaks on the Titans’ historic Eastern Conference Quarter-final victory and preparing for the St. Catharines Falcons in Round 2.

Carter Vincente’s Playoff Performance
Titans’ goaltender Carter Vincente has been a key factor in the team’s success, especially with his 29-save shutout effort in their Game 7 win over the Centennials. Fitzgerald had high praise for Vincente, describing him as a player who excels even when the team isn’t at its best. “We brought him in to be our number one goaltender, and he’s done just that,” Fitzgerald said. “Carter has been exceptional in high-pressure moments, including his Game 7 shutout. He’s a big-time goalie, and his ability to manage the game and make crucial saves has been vital. Beyond his play, he’s also an outstanding person with an infectious smile, and he’s great with the young fans at the rink. He’s been a tremendous addition to the team.”

Pride in the Team’s Resilience
Reflecting on the team’s resilience, Fitzgerald highlighted their ability to push through adversity. “When you’re up 3-0 in a series and then lose three straight, it’s easy to get discouraged. But the way we responded in Game 7 showed the mental toughness of our group,” Fitzgerald said.  “It was a team win.  Everyone stepped up when it mattered, and that’s what I’m most proud of.”

Patrick Babin’s Contribution
Rookie defenceman and Brantford Bulldogs prospect Patrick Babin — who led the Titans with 9 points in the series — has impressed with his performance during the playoffs, particularly with his ice time and ability to contribute offensively. Fitzgerald noted that Babin’s hockey IQ sets him apart. “Patrick has an elite hockey IQ.  He sees the game at a very high level, especially for a first-year junior player,” he explained. “He’s put in the work to mature his game, which has allowed him to lead the team in ice time. He’s a key player for us, a very humble kid who understands that development is a marathon, not a sprint. He’s been a big part of our success.”

Key Factors in the Game 7 Victory
In the critical Game 7, Fitzgerald attributed the Titans’ victory to sticking to their structure and playing to their strengths. “There were moments in Games 4 and 5 where we got away from our system, but after a hard reset, we came back strong,” Fitzgerald said. “The (2-1) loss in Game 6 actually gave us momentum. We refocused, and that made all the difference in Game 7.”

Coaching in High-Pressure Situations
Fitzgerald emphasized the importance of staying focused and sticking to the team’s plan during high-pressure playoff games. “We talked about it in September, and we’ve been building towards this moment all season. Our goal was to be a team that no one wanted to play come playoff time,” he explained. “To win a round in this franchise’s history is massive. We stayed focused and didn’t get distracted by outside noise.”

Looking Ahead to the St. Catharines Falcons
As the Titans prepare for their second-round matchup against the #1 seed Falcons, Fitzgerald knows they’ll face a tough challenge.  “St. Catharines is a mature team with a deep lineup, but we’re ready for the challenge,” he said.  “We don’t need to be superhuman, but we must be mindful that with the team they have, there’s no shift we can take off. It’s just another game, and we’ll need to play the right way.”

With the Titans riding high after their historic first-round upset, they’re poised to take on St. Catharines.
