After a hard-fought six-game series, the St. Catharines Falcons have emerged as the Eastern Conference Champions, securing a spot in the highly anticipated Sutherland Cup Final. Tyler Bielby, discussed the pivotal moments of their journey, the leadership on the team, and the mindset heading into the championship series.
The Turning Point: Game 4
When asked about the defining moment of the series, Bielby highlighted Game 4 as a critical turning point. “Game 4 was pivotal for us. We were down 3-1 in the game and 2-1 in the series. That game gave our guys all the confidence they needed and helped us get over the mental hump. It was a huge momentum shift,” Bielby explained.
Hayden Jeffrey: A Key Leader at Just 18
The Falcons’ success this season has been driven by the leadership of their core players, including 18-year-old Hayden Jeffrey. Bielby praised Jeffrey, calling him the team’s “crest guy.” “He’s been exceptional for us, and despite being only 18, he’s shown that age doesn’t define a goalie,” said Bielby.
“There’s a lot of talk in our league that you can only win with 20-year-old goalies, but Hayden is proving otherwise. He’s a big part of why we’re where we are.”
Cameron Lowe Playoff Performance
Another standout player has been Cameron Lowe, who has led by example after battling through significant injuries. “Cam wanted to make the most of his last year,” Bielby shared. “He worked hard through rehab and showed the young guys what it takes to win. His dedication has been contagious, and for the first time, that winning mentality is spreading throughout the team.”
Tyson Downs Memorial Trophy
Bielby also reflected on the team’s recognition as the first recipient of the conference championship trophy, the “Tyson Downs Memorial Trophy”. The trophy was named after former Kitcherner-Waterloo Siskin “Tyson Downs”, who tragically passed away in the summer of 2023, at the young age of 18. “At the end of the day, we play a kid’s game. We’re about to celebrate a trophy, but outside the arena, life is real,” he said. “We didn’t get caught up in the celebration. We took the time to respect and honour Tyson Down’s family… which was the team’s idea. It’s a small community, and we wanted to play our part.” On the ice after the game the team would go on to all individually shake the hands of Tyson Downs parents.
Looking Ahead
As the Falcons prepare for the Sutherland Cup Final, Bielby emphasized the importance of focusing on what has brought the team this far. “We don’t play for conference championships. Our organization has 18 conference banners, but only two Sutherland Cup championships,” he said. “We don’t want any ‘buts’ after this playoff run. We’re all in for the Sutherland Cup.”
As the St. Catharines Falcons look ahead to the Sutherland Cup Final, it’s clear that their focus remains on consistency, leadership, and maintaining the values that have gotten them to this point. With a mix of youthful energy and seasoned leadership, they’re poised to make a strong push for the Sutherland Cup.
