Sutherland Cup Profile: Chase MacQueen-Spence

Captain is one of six Lincolns getting a second chance in Sutherland Cup final

In his four seasons as a St. Marys Lincoln, Chase MacQueen-Spence has enjoyed numerous individual and team successes.  But the Sutherland Cup is the one glaring omission on what is an otherwise impressive GOHL resume.

After defeat in his first finals appearance, the Lincolns captain is one of six St. Marys players getting a second chance at claiming the historic trophy.

In 2023-24 — MacQueen-Spence’s second season — the Lincolns claimed their first conference/league playoff title since 1994.  They advanced to the Sutherland Cup final where they lost in five games to the Listowel Cyclones.  MacQueen-Spence led all GOHL scorers in the 2024 post-season with 15 goal and 32 points in 24 games.

The next season, MacQueen-Spence — a fourth round pick by the North Bay Battalion in 2021 — was one of five St. Marys players to score 25 or more goals as the Lincolns claimed their first regular season conference/league title since 2006 before being upset in the Western Conference final by the Chatham Maroons.

This past season, MacQueen-Spence had 50 points while accumulating just 14 minutes in penalties.  He was awarded the Bill Lochead Trophy as the Most Gentlemanly Player in Western Conference (video).   In his four seasons, he set career franchise records for goals (80), assists (113) and points (193).

The third place Lincolns upset the second-seeded Elmira Sugar Kings in the Western Conference final, giving the Lincolns their second conference playoff title in three years.

And giving MacQueen-Spence a second chance at a Sutherland Cup.

There are five other current Lincolns who were on the 2024 team who lost in the Sutherland Cup final:  Blake Elzinga, Ethan Weir, Jacob Montesi, Owen Voortman and Ryan Hodkinson.  Of those five, only Montesi and Voortman match MacQueen-Spence’s four seasons as a Lincoln.

Through the first three rounds of the 2026 playoffs, MacQueen-Spence had 12 points — including two game-winning goals — giving him 67 points in 74 career playoff games.

The Lincolns finished third or better and reached the conference final in each of Chase’s four seasons with the Lincolns, facts not lost on Lincolns head coach Jeff Bradley.  “Chase is a true Lincoln.  It’s not a coincidence that the success the team has had lines up with his tenure.  He exemplifies everything that we want out of our players.”
