Tyler Bielby, head coach of the Eastern Conference’s #1 seeded St. Catharines Falcons, shared his thoughts on the team’s performance after securing a spot in the conference semi-finals with a hard-fought victory over the #8 Hamilton Kilty B’s in five games.
Cameron Lowe’s Leadership and Impact
Cameron Lowe has been one of the standout players in the Falcons’ playoff run, contributing a team-high 10 points in 5 games. Bielby, who coached Lowe at 16 years old, praised his hockey instincts and leadership. “Cameron has always had an exceptional hockey IQ, and that hasn’t changed as he’s grown into a key contributor for us. He makes everyone around him better through his ability to distribute the puck. He’s a quiet leader, but his play speaks volumes,” Bielby explained. “He leads by example, and the young guys look up to him. His leadership is contagious.”
Offensive Success and Depth
The Falcons’ offence has been firing on all cylinders, and Bielby believes this success stems from the depth of the team. “Ice time is a privilege, and our players understand that they need to make the most of every opportunity they get,” he said. “Our depth is a big reason for our offensive success, and as the playoffs progress, the game gets tougher, and time and space get smaller. We preach confidence and making the most of every chance.”
Standout Players and Defensive Play
When asked about players who stepped up during the series, Bielby singled out Lowe and Brendan Grenville for their leadership. “Cam Lowe, our captain, and Brendan Grenville have been tremendous in leading by example with their work ethic,” Bielby noted. “The young guys see the effort they put in and follow suit. We’ve been talking about the importance of drive and sacrifice since September, [and] they’ve taught the young guys how to compete at a high level.” Bielby reflected on the team’s defensive play, acknowledging that there are always areas for improvement. “We’ve been defending well, but there’s always room to tighten things up,” he said. “We have a great group of defensemen who take pride in playing solid defence, and that’s something we’ve been working on all season. Besides an empty net goal, we’ve kept it under two goals per game in the playoffs, and that’s something we’ll continue to build on.”
First Round Matchup
The Falcons faced a challenge when the series was tied 1-1 against Hamilton. Bielby explained that the tough competition helped the team regain focus. “Hamilton really helped us find our focus by challenging us,” he said. “They weren’t going to just roll over, and we lost the battle of wills early, which ended up being a great thing for us. It got more physical, and it forced us to focus and push back, which showed on the scoreboard.”
Keys to Continued Success in the Playoffs
Looking ahead, Bielby identified the team’s defense as a critical factor for continued success. “All eight of our defensemen who played in the series have been crucial,” Bielby noted. “We defend first and take pride in our defensive zone. We know there aren’t many players like Cale Makar’s and he is him for a reason, so we focus on keeping it tight in our zone. We have guys like Trent Vaillancourt, who are willing to block shots, and Dallys Hibbert, who contributed with two power-play goals in the series. Our defense-first mentality has been key all season, and it will continue to be as we move forward in the playoffs.”
With strong performances on both ends of the ice, the Falcons will be an exciting team to watch in the second round.
