Trevor Zanutto scored twice and Viljami Kukkola stopped 31 of 33 shots faced to lead the defending Sutherland Cup champion Chatham Maroons to a 5-3 win over the St. Thomas Stars in front of 869 spectators at Memorial Arena in Chatham on Sunday night.
The Sutherland Cup was on the ice and a championship banner was raised to the rafters in a pre-game ceremony.
Max Skinner (Saginaw Spirit, 2025), Evan Krell and Carter Chadwick also scored for the Maroons (2-0-0-0) who outshot the Stars 61-33.
Rory Savage (Sudbury Wolves. 2023), Reid Crossman (Brantford Bulldogs, 2025) and Cade Kinnear (Soo Greyhounds, 2024) each scored their first career GOJHL goals in their debut for St. Thomas (0-1-0-0). Stars netminder Dylan Durno (Owen Sound Attack, 2024) made 56 saves in his GOJHL debut.
