GOHL Celebrates Landmark Season of Growth, Development, and Opportunity

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Greater Ontario Hockey League (GOHL)

The Greater Ontario Hockey League (GOHL) proudly concludes one of the most successful seasons in its history, marked by exceptional player development, outstanding attendance, and continued validation as a premier pathway to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

The 2025–26 season showcased the very best of GOHL hockey, culminating in a thrilling championship series between the Cambridge Redhawks and the St. Marys Lincolns.  Both organizations demonstrated elite-level competition, structure, and professionalism, reinforcing the league’s position as a true development environment aligned with the next level of the game.

Off the ice, the league experienced exponential growth in fan engagement, with attendance numbers outstanding across multiple markets. Communities rallied behind their teams, creating an electric atmosphere that reflects the growing strength and credibility of the GOHL brand.

A significant driver of this success has been the strong and consistent presence of Ontario Hockey League leadership, with numerous OHL General Managers and key decision-makers attending GOHL games throughout the season.  Their presence has provided invaluable exposure for players across the league, ensuring that athletes of all ages are being evaluated and recognized, and reinforcing that opportunities to advance continue to exist at every stage of development.

Further highlighting the strength and depth of the league, the GOHL features an impressive 242 OHL draft picks across its rosters, ranging from ages 16 to 20.  This concentration of elite-level talent is a key reason why the league’s on-ice product continues to be of exceptionally high quality, providing a competitive and development-rich environment every night.

Adding to that credibility, the GOHL is proud to recognize that three players were included in the latest NHL Central Scouting rankings ahead of the upcoming NHL Draft.  This achievement underscores the elite level of talent within the league and reinforces the GOHL’s growing reputation as a legitimate development platform.

At the heart of the league’s success remains its unmatched development pathway:

Minor Hockey → GOHL → OHL

This season alone saw numerous players advance with direct OHL connections, further solidifying the GOHL’s role as the official development league of the OHL.  Notably, the league proudly witnessed an 18-year-old player earn an OHL opportunity for the upcoming season, reinforcing that development is not limited by age, but driven by opportunity, structure, and performance.

GOHL Commissioner Craig Spada expressed his excitement following the league’s Sutherland Cup Finals.

“This season has been nothing short of exceptional for the Greater Ontario Hockey League. From the level of play on the ice to the support in our buildings, we are seeing the full vision of what this league can be.  Our players are advancing, our teams are thriving, and our communities are engaged.”

“We are extremely proud to continue as the OHL Development League and are very excited entering our second year under this model.  The pathway is real, it’s working, and it’s creating opportunities for players at all stages of their development.  With OHL General Managers regularly in our buildings, our players are being seen, evaluated, and given real opportunities to advance — regardless of age.”

“When you combine that with the numerous OHL draft picks playing in our league and players being recognized by NHL Central Scouting, it speaks directly to the level of hockey being played.  This is a high-quality league, and it continues to grow.  We have several major announcements ahead that will further elevate our league and strengthen that pathway.”

The GOHL’s commitment to development, structure, and alignment with the OHL remains at the forefront of its mission.  With continued collaboration, innovation, and investment in players, the league is poised for even greater growth in the seasons ahead.

As momentum builds, one message is clear:

The path through the GOHL is not only proven — it’s thriving.
