Lorraine Large stands at the heart of the Pelham Panthers’ off-ice operations, bringing a wealth of experience and a deep-rooted passion for community engagement.  As the coordinator of front desk operations during home games,  Lorraine’s role extends far beyond game day logistics. She spearheads initiatives to foster partnerships with local businesses, organizes fundraising events like golf tournaments, and plays a pivotal role in community outreach efforts.

Early Connections and Family Legacy
For Lorraine, hockey has been a family affair. Her father, Fred Gee, had affiliations with the old Hamilton team, and her brother, Wesley Gee, is now the proud owner of the Pelham Panthers. Growing up immersed in hockey culture, Lorraine’s journey with the Panthers began in her late teens, driven by a shared familial dedication to the sport.  “It’s really a family thing,” Lorraine says. “My father and brother were both so passionate about hockey, and it’s something I’ve always been involved in”

Evolution of Role and Impact
Since joining the Panthers, Lorraine’s role has evolved significantly. Beyond administrative duties, she has become a linchpin in the team’s efforts to integrate into the Pelham community. Her efforts have contributed to a notable increase in attendance at home games, driven by strategic community outreach initiatives and events like the Santa Claus parade.  “We had a bit of a rough start,” Lorraine reflects. “But it’s been so rewarding to see the community’s response. We’ve worked hard to get our name out there, and the last few home games saw a huge increase in attendance.”

Lorraine is referring to how Pelham’s season came down to a thrilling final game against Brantford, where the team had a chance to clinch a playoff spot. The entire community rallied behind the Panthers, coming out in full force to support them. Although they ultimately lost the game, it highlighted the incredible potential of the community she had helped cultivate.

Memorable Fan and Community Experiences
Lorraine is all about creating lasting memories for both fans and community partners. She remembers the personal connections she’s made along the way, whether it’s handing out free passes at local events or helping fans meet former NHLer and now Pelham Panthers head coach “Zac Rinaldo”. For Lorraine, it’s all about building relationships that stick.  “For me, it’s all about the people,” she says. “When fans walk by and they recognize you, say hi, or thank you for the event, that’s the best part.  It’s the relationships you build and the sense of accomplishment when you know you’ve made a difference.”

Building Bridges with Volunteers and Partners
Integral to Lorraine’s approach is the cultivation of strong relationships with volunteers and local partners.  From retired referees being part of the security team to interns from Niagara College gaining hands-on experience, Lorraine ensures that each contributor feels valued and integral to the Panthers’ success.  “We have some great volunteers, like a retired referee who helps with security. It’s a family affair here.  One of our 50/50 volunteers is even a father-daughter duo. That sense of togetherness is something special,” Lorraine explains

The Recipe for Community Engagement Success
According to Lorraine, the key to the Panthers’ community involvement lies in understanding and fulfilling local needs. By actively participating in community events and partnering with key sponsors like McDonald’s and Tim Hortons, the team not only enhances its visibility but also reinforces its commitment to local causes.  “The secret is finding out what the community needs from us, and being there to support them,” Lorraine says. “We’re always willing to send players to events, whether it’s a community fundraiser or a charity event. We want to be visible and active.”

Unique Initiatives and Future Prospects
Looking ahead, Lorraine is excited about introducing new initiatives to further deepen the Panthers’ connection with their fans and partners. From expanding youth outreach programs to innovative sponsorship activations, her vision is set on sustaining and expanding the team’s community impact.

Lorraine Large exemplifies the spirit of community engagement that defines the Pelham Panthers. Her dedication, coupled with leadership, continues to elevate the organization’s presence in Pelham. Lorraine remains a cornerstone in their quest to build a resilient and community-oriented hockey franchise.

Through her efforts, Lorraine Large not only strengthens the Panthers’ ties with their local community but also sets a standard for community involvement across junior hockey leagues. Her story speaks truth to the power of small-town hockey in fostering unity and camaraderie beyond the rink.  As Lorraine puts it, “I do this to keep my dad’s memory alive and assist my brother and family in making the Pelham Panthers a well-run organization.”
