
Gilby’s shorthanded goal gives Team Thornton win

Nicholas Gilby (Port Colborne Sailors) scored a shorthanded goal with 7:07 left in the third period (video), snapping a 3-3 tie and lifting Team Thornton to a 5-3 win over Team Scheifele in the GOHL Top Prospects Game in front of a crowd of 522 at the Miskin Law Community Complex in Peterborough.
Owen Miniotas (Komoka Kings), Justin Flora (Welland Canadians), Max Wildfong (Stratford Warriors) and Myles Dunn (St. Thomas Stars) added goals for Team Thornton. Dunn’s goal was an empty-netter. Lyndon Cabral (Listowel Cyclones) had 2 assists. Flora was named MVP for Team Thornton.
Michael Pope (Caledon Bombers), Cody Wood (London Nationals) and Benjamin Brunton (Elmira Sugar Kings) replied for Team Scheifele. Parker Smith (Cambridge Redhawks) had an assist and was named MVP for Team Scheifele.
Seth Ronan (Strathroy Rockets) started in net for Team Thornton, stopping 6 of 8 shots faced. Vaughn Barr (St. Marys Lincolns) took over midway through the second period and made 10 saves on 11 shots. With his team trailing 2-1 late in the second period, Barr made a pad save on a penalty shot attempt by Cole Edmundson (St. Thomas Stars).
Team Scheifele starting netminder William Camputaro (St. Thomas Stars) stopped 7 of 8 shots faced in the first half of the game. He was replaced by Liam Edgcumbe (Pelham Panthers) who made 5 saves on 8 shots faced.
The GOHL’s top OHL prospects made up the rosters for Team Thornton and Team Scheifele — teams named in honour of highly accomplished GOHL alumni Joe Thornton (St. Thomas Stars, 1993-95) and Mark Scheifele (Kitchener Dutchmen, 2009-10), who became franchise pillars with the Soo Greyhounds and Barrie Colts respectively before making their mark in the NHL.
The game was a preliminary showcase presented in conjunction with the OHL’s Connor McDavid OHL Top Prospects Game on Wednesday.
